Deputies seek 'dangerous' robber Monday, January 30, 2006
The Baldwin County Sheriff's Office is looking for a man considered to be armed and dangerous and involved with a Saturday night armed robbery of a BP gas station just off Interstate 65 in Rabon , officials said Sunday.
Two Eight Mile men and one juvenile were arrested Saturday night after law enforcement officials pursued an early 1990s maroon Cadillac after it drove away from the robbery of the I-65 BP near the intersection of Alabama 287 and the interstate, according to a Sheriff's Office report.
A fourth man escaped after the car stopped and he ran into woods near the 13-mile marker on I-65 close to the Saraland exit, the report said.
The man is "considered armed and very dangerous," because of the bold nature of the crime that took place while the business was open, according to the report and Lt. John Murphy, a spokesman with the Sheriff's Office.
The man hasn't been identified, but his face was likely caught on surveillance footage shot at the BP store and from an Alabama State Trooper's car, Murphy said.
Brothers Tony Darnell Paige, 19, and Roderick Terrelle Paige, 18, both of Everett Street in Eight Mile, are charged with first-degree robbery and are being held at the Baldwin County Corrections Center on a $25,000 bond, according to the jail's Web site.
A 15-year-old juvenile with a Mobile address was also arrested and is being held at the Baldwin County Regional Juvenile Detention Center, the report said.
No one was hurt in the robbery in which two men entered the I-65 BP about 9 p.m. Saturday with two pistols, Murphy said.
"They both come running in," said one of the two clerks at the store Saturday night, who asked not to be identified. "One came around the counter with a gun, and the other one jumped across the counter with a gun."
Murphy couldn't confirm which of the men entered the store, he said.
No customers were in the store, but some were outside pumping gas during the robbery, the clerk said.
While the men were in the store for a total of about 30 seconds, another man stayed by the door and a fourth sat in the Cadillac, the report and the clerk said.
After taking cash from three registers, the men drove toward Mobile on I-65, according to the report and the clerk.
A State Trooper recognized the car driving south on I-65 and pursued it until it pulled over near the Saraland exit, the report said. The trooper convinced three men to remain in the car, but the fourth man ran, Murphy said.
A State Trooper helicopter, dogs and handlers from the Atmore State Prison, Baldwin County sheriff deputies and Saraland Police Department officers searched for the fourth man until after midnight, the report said. The search was called off because of severe thunderstorms, officials said.
The I-65 BP was broken into twice in 2004, but both the incidents occurred when it was closed, store and sheriffs officials said.
