The United States continues to experience a severe fire problem of great national concern. According to the US Fire Administration, fire kills more Americans than all natural disasters combined. More than 4,000 Americans die each year in fires and more than 20,000 are injured. Many of these fire casualties are preventable.

Eighty-two percent of all fire deaths occur in the home.

Americans over the age of 65 are one of the groups at highest risk of dying in a fire.

Having a working smoke alarm reduces one's chance of dying in a fire by nearly a half.

In 2006, fire departments participating in the Texas Fire Incident Reporting System, TEXFIRS, reported the following fire activity in this state,

95,971 total fires, a fire occurred every 5 minutes,

179 civilian fire deaths, approximately 22% annual increase,

788 civilian fire injuries, 7% annual increase

Smoke detectors present and operated in only 21% of residential structure fires,

29% of civilian deaths in residential property involved the elderly (age 65 and over),

$470,174,297 in property loss due to fire,

8,178 incendiary/suspicious fires.

In 2006, there were 22,182 structure fires reported throughout the state. These fires resulted in 652 civilian injuries, 122 civilian deaths, 427 fire service injuries, one fire service death and an estimated $363,257,545 in property loss.
