Fire departments busy
Lisa Luna, Staff Writer - Wednesday, December 26, 2007 - PleasantonExpress
Scott Garris of the Pleasanton Volunteer Fire Department reported the cause of a large fire on the 74 Ranch in Campbellton is still being investigated.
The fire began about 2 p.m. on Friday, December 21, about six miles west of Campbellton on FM 791. Garris estimates that the fire caused damages to at least 550 acres. The fire may have been started by a power line, said Garris, but the department is still looking into it.
Before the Campbellton fire, the Pleasanton, Leming and Jourdanton Volunteer Fire Departments were among those assisting Wilson County with a fire. The large fire occurred off 536 and 112 and, said Garris, was at least 3 miles in length. It damaged brush and coastal fields and threatened several homes and barns.
Garris reminds Atascosa County residents that we are still under a burn ban. He added that it does not look like the ban will be lifted anytime soon.
Son indicted for shooting father

The Atascosa County Grand Jury in a special session December 10 handed down an indictment on Jose “Joey” Valdez Lara Jr., 30, of San Antonio, in the shooting death of his father, Jose Olivarez Lara, 51.
The elder Lara was found dead from gunshot wounds and lying in the front yard of his rural home about 5 miles northwest of Jourdanton on July 21, 2007.
Last week the Grand Jury was given evidence collected by the Atascosa County sheriff’s investigators and a Texas Ranger. Joey Lara, the victim’s estranged son, was charged with capital murder during the commission of a robbery. He was also indicted with burglary of a building.
Investigators allege Joey Lara returned to the murder scene on September 11 and burglarized a storage building. He was arrested in mid October and has remained in the Atascosa County Jail since his arrest. Bonds on the indictments were set at $500,000 on the murder charge and $75,000 on the burglary charge.
Also named in an indictment was Lara’s former roommate and former San Antonio Park Police Officer Arnulfo “Rudy” Campos Ybarra Jr., 41, of San Antonio. Ybarra was charged for allegedly tampering with physical evidence and criminal attempted tampering. He was arrested originally on October 18 and released on a $40,000 bond. Then on December 13, Atascosa County sheriff investigators and San Antonio police re-arrested Ybarra at his home following the Grand Jury’s indictment. Ybarra’s bond was raised to total of $100,000. On Friday, December 14, Ybarra was released again from jail on bond.
No additional arrests are anticipated at this time, according to Chief Deputy David Soward, who added, “Ninety-eight percent of the investigation is complete and has been forwarded to District Attorney Rene Peña.”

A 67-year-old woman was killed in a Poteet house fire Friday night, her body discovered only after firefighters had extinguished the blaze.
Maria Ana Castaneda was living in a small, two-room building in the 200 block of Avenue E, next to a mobile home, said Poteet Police Department Lt. Darrell Newman.
Firefighters were called to the building for reports of a fire around 10:30 p.m. Friday. By the time they arrived, the house was fully involved, Newman said.
Firefighters from Poteet, Pleasanton and Jourdanton all helped to extinguish the blaze, which investigators believe was electrical, according to Newman. They found Castaneda inside the house, where she was living alone, the lieutenant said.
The Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office still has not determined her cause of death. Newman said she did suffer burns.
