Palestine man arrested for burglary,
other charges

By PAUL STONE
The Palestine Herald

PALESTINE — A 22-year-old Palestine man was arrested early Tuesday by Anderson County sheriff’s authorities who say the career criminal was in the act of burglarizing a county residence at the time.

As of late Tuesday afternoon, Robert Estridge, 22, of Palestine remained in the Anderson County Jail on charges of burglary of a habitation; assault of a public servant; resisting arrest, search or transport; and public intoxication, according to Anderson County Sheriff Greg Taylor.

Jail records show that Estridge has been arrested in Anderson County on a total of 28 charges since November 2002 “for various offenses,” Taylor stated.

Estridge was arrested by sheriff’s deputies shortly before 2 a.m. Tuesday as he allegedly was in the act of burglarizing a residence in the 200 block of CR 367, approximately 1 mile east of the Palestine city limits, according to the sheriff.

Taylor said the homeowner reported the “burglary in progress” at 1:48 a.m. Tuesday.

“We got a call from the homeowner that someone was trying to get in one of her windows and was cutting the screen,” Taylor said. “...(Deputy Richard) Welch arrived and confronted the suspect and began inquiring. He recognized him because he had dealt with him. The guy (Estridge) advanced real quickly towards the deputy. The deputy took him to the ground and handcuffed him.”

During the scuffle, Estridge allegedly kicked the deputy in the leg, the sheriff stated.

A short time later, sheriff’s Sgt. Charles Conner arrived on the scene to assist Welch, according to the sheriff.

A electric chainsaw, which had been located on the residence’s front porch, was found near the roadway, according to Taylor. Deputies also found “where he had cut a screen on the house trying to get in a window,” the sheriff added.

“I just appreciate the quick response of my deputies,” Taylor said. “I’m glad we got there before he got in the house.”

Fire destroys mobile home in county

By PAUL STONE
The Palestine Herald

PALESTINE — No injuries were reported in a weekend fire that destroyed a single-wide mobile home in southern Anderson County.

Authorities were notified of the blaze at 11:55 a.m. Saturday, according to Anderson County Sheriff Greg Taylor.

The fire destroyed a 14 foot-by-65 foot mobile home located at 109 CR 2120, the sheriff stated. It apparently started when a resident used gasoline to ignite a fire in a stove located inside the house, he added.

“He was trying to light a fire in an iron, wood-burning stove,” Taylor said. “...It kind of burst out of the doors and caught the surrounding area on fire. He tried to put it out, but just couldn’t.”

When Anderson County sheriff’s deputy John Wright arrived on the scene, Taylor said “the whole trailer was engulfed” and “the roof was beginning to collapse.”

Taylor said the resident had his hair “synged” slightly, but was otherwise uninjured.

The sheriff said the three residents living at the mobile home regularly used gasoline to start their inside fire.

“You shouldn’t use accelerants like that to start a fire inside a house,” Taylor stated.

The Tucker, Elkhart, Southside and Westside volunteer fire departments all responded to the blaze.

The American Red Cross has been contacted to assist the persons who had been living at the residence, according to the sheriff.
